What this number means

Contribution here means job revenue minus materials, subcontractors and direct labour cost. Dividing by labour hours shows how much contribution each labour hour leaves before shared costs such as vans, rent and admin. It is a useful comparison between types of work; it is not net profit or a full charge-out rate.

Use the same basis for every type

Use revenue and costs for the same period, exclude VAT if you are VAT registered, and count labour hours consistently. Include employed labour cost even when those hours are also entered as the divisor. Leave shared overhead out here so you can see the direct contribution first.
